Petworth & Pulborough Scout District

As Scouts, we prepare young people with #SkillsforLife in West Sussex

Cubs are young people aged between 8 and 10½, who make up the second section of the Scouting family, between Beavers and Scouts.

Activities

During their time in the Pack, Cubs will get a chance to try lots of different activities like swimming, music, exploring, computing and collecting.

There are a range of badges available which Cubs can wear on their uniforms to show everyone how well they're doing.

Cubs also get to go on trips and days out, to places like the zoo, theme parks or a farm. Sometimes they will be able to go camping with the rest of the Pack and take part in all kinds of outdoor activities.

Structure and organisation

A Pack of Cubs is organised into Sixes, with each Six named after a colour, and a Sixer and a Seconder in charge.

Suspension of face to face Scouting
16/03/2020 By Glyn Pullen

With regret I have inform you that we have taken the decision to suspend all face to face Scouting in Petworth and Pulborough District with immediate effect and until further notice. This follows a national decision from Scout HQ.

St Georges Day has been cancelled and we will update you with regards to Petworth Park and the JOTT in the near future.

We are looking at what can be done to provide remote Scouting opportunities and hope to have some ideas out soon.

Here is the link to the national announcement https://scouts-news.org.uk/31ME-10O0C-D76U42KAA5/cr.aspx

Stay safe and healthy

Blog | The great indoors
13/04/2020 By Nick Layt

Keep your kids learning new skills and having fun (and avoid hearing ‘I’m bored’ every 30 seconds) all in #TheGreatIndoors.

See the Scout HQ website for all the details at https://www.scouts.org.uk/the-great-indoors

For other resources such a magazines, books and newspapers why not pop along to your local library? Impossible during the lockdown? Not at all. West Sussex Council provides library members with an e-library that has all of these for free. No need for expensive magaizine subscriptions - just pop along and download onto your phone or tablet.

It is a servicer available to all West Sussex Library members as you need your library card number to log in. See more information at https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/libraries/elibrary-electronic-library/. We have popped a reminder on our members noticeboard page too.

Report: Cub & Beaver Paddlesport Days
08/09/2018 By Chris Evans

Our Paddlesport Team was out in force at the Wey & Arun Canal this summer with two taster days for Cubs and Beavers to have a go on the water in all sorts of exciting watercraft.  (There were a few suspiciously tall Cubs sneaking in too!)

The young people could try:

Rafts

Canadian Canoes

Stand-up Paddleboards

Sit-on Kayaks

Closed Cockpit Kayaks

The weather was fabulous and a terrific time was had by all.  It was hard work for the team but they are all looking forward to doing it again next year!

If you have an interest in water activities and would like to help young people to join your interest, and have a load of fun along the way then we'd love to hear from you! ddcevents@pandpscouts.org.uk

St Georges Day 2018
06/09/2018 By Chris Evans

Parham in Sussex at Storrington was the venue for our 2018 District get together. We held a short service with the colours flying, an address from our District Chaplin, Ben Martin and musical accompaniment with rousing choruses of When a Knight Won His Spurs, Sussex by the Sea and, of course, The National Anthem from Petworth Town Band.

Robert Sawyer, West Sussex Scouts County Commissioner, presented Pat Homer, District Secretary, with her Chief Scouts Commendation; Glyn Pullen, District Commissioner, received his Award for Merit and Kath Bridger, our previous District Commissioner, received her Bar to the Award for Merit.

Following the service everyone took part in a wide variety of activities. We had stalls to raise funds for our young people going to the World Jamboree in 2018 including s’mores, woggle making, sweets and pyrography which raised £80. Some of the groups brought activities including Ifold who helped people make dutch pancakes and S&S offered archery, badge making and biscuit decorating.

The District provided a soap box car track which caused hilarity all round (how hard can it be to drive in a circle?) and thankfully no serious injuries along with pedal cars and grass sledges.

The weather was superb and the District expresses its thanks to all those who made the day possible. Especially the Jamboree parents and the Scout Active Support.

St Georges Day 2019 will be Sunday 28th April (TBC)

Report: Chief Scouts Awards April 2018
06/09/2018 By Chris Evans

The Chief Scouts Award is the highest award in each section of the Scouts; Bronze for Beavers, Silver for Cubs, Gold for Scouts then Platinum and Diamond followed by the Queens Scouts Award in Explorers and Network.

In District we like to recognise the effort put into the CSA’s, The Scouts and older sections are invited to a County Reception so we focus on the two younger sections.

Our CSA day took a new format this time to make it more interactive for the young people and parents. Held at Fittleworth Village Hall; the day was split in half with Beavers in the morning and Cubs in the afternoon, they took part in a range of activities, each one based on one of the Challenge Badges that they earned in order to get their CSA. Activities included fire lighting, target shooting with Nerf guns, biscuit decorating, building spaghetti towers (dried not tinned) and X.

The young people were then presented with their CSA certificates by Glyn Pullen, District Commissioner before rounding off the session with sandwiches and cake!

Our heartiest congratulations go to all of the recipients

And we wish them all the very best of luck in the next stage of Scouting

The District would like to thank the Scout Active Support for tea and cakes.
